Contact Lens Care

Whether you are a first time contact lens wearer or not, make sure you see your eye doctor once a year to ensure an accurate prescription.

Now that you have your lenses here is what the American Optometric Association recommends to do to take care of them...
  1. Always wash your hands before handling contact lenses.

  2. Carefully and regularly clean contact lenses, as directed by your optometrist. Rub the contact lenses with fingers and rinse thoroughly before soaking lenses overnight in sufficient multi-purpose solution to completely cover the lens.

  3. Store lenses in the proper lens storage case and replace the case at a minimum of every three months. Clean the case after each use, and keep it open and dry between cleanings.

  4. Use only products recommended by your optometrist to clean and disinfect your lenses. Saline solution and re-wetting drops are not designed to disinfect lenses.

  5. Only fresh solution should be used to clean and store contact lenses. Never re-use old solution. Contact lens solution must be changed according to the manufacturer's recommendations, even if the lenses are not used daily.

  6. Always follow the recommended contact lens replacement schedule prescribed by your optometrist.

Eye Exam Checklist

To ensure a successful eye examination there are something you as a patient should do. Here is a list VSP suggest to go over before scheduling your next eye health examination.

What to think about before your visit:
  • Have I noticed any eye problems such as blurry vision, flashes of light, poor night vision, or double vision?
  • Do I have trouble judging distances or distinguishing between reds and greens?
  • Is a vision problem making me nervous about doing certain activities?
  • Am I willing to listen to the eye doctor’s advice about fixing my vision problems, even if it might be difficult?
  • How well am I taking care of my glasses or contacts? Do I take my contacts out each night and rinse them thoroughly?
  • Have I had any health issues, injuries, operations, or sicknesses lately that my eye doctor should know about?
  • Does my family have a history of eye problems such as glaucoma or cataracts?

What to bring:

  • Your current glasses, sunglasses, and contacts
  • A list of current medications—and not just prescription medications. Your eye doctor can look at the list and determine if your medications could be affecting your vision.
  • The name and address of your primary care doctor
  • Your vision insurance information
  • A list of the questions you want to ask your doctor so you don’t forget them
